FREE-ZON
PROJECT NAME
This memorial of liberation must evoke: the pain; the sacrifice and violence suffered by our martyrs, but also the fruit of this long struggle «the rediscovered freedom». what more does he have as opposed to colonization and freedom? And to announce to the public, this double color that carries our memorial, I called it «free-zon»: a word composed of FREE for the independence of Algeria and ZON of prison, because a nation under colonization, is a imprisoned nation.
VOLUMETRIC COMPOSITION
1- The project is a cubic composition whose base is an octagonal star (rigid and stable regular geometric shape that symbolizes the resistance of the martyrs), obtained from a fictitious rotation to match the edges of the square on the two axes: the first that of memory, the red axis, it starts with the martyr's monument and ends with the sea, the second axis, the green axis, which will connect the trial garden with central Algiers.
2- Put the octagon in the foreground because it is a reminder of our Islamic identity (mosaic).
3- The project is organized around a patio (a second reminder of our architectural identity through introversion and which notably characterizes the spatial organization of prisons). In this patio there is a large basin whose water will be tinted red to symbolize the color of the blood of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.
SPATIAL ORGANIZATION
There are 4 identical staircases, each palliasse contains 8 steps, this figure represents the 8 years of the Algerian resistance until its independence
This memorial consists of 5 levels:
- 2 levels with a total of 16 exhibition boxes (the latter represent the cells of the prison. Each box is dedicated to a martyr).
- 2 levels of open grouping exhibition
- Terrace
The public takes 132 steps (a reminder of the years of colonization) to go around between the cells on the 1st floor and other 132 steps for the cells on the 3rd floor.
The culmination of the exhibition visit is represented by a panoramic terrace (symbol of independence) covered by a roof of a shape inspired by the leaves of palm trees (a reminder of Algerian culture).
THE OUTER ENVELOPE
The idea is to allow the reading of the concept from outside the project, through the installation of 16 perforated panels in several units of square shape and varying sizes, created by a parametric script. This perforation system will result in the pixelated image of a portrait of a martyr for each panel.
Once at night, these facades will be animated by LED lighting to accentuate the identity and volume of the memorial and also to create a unique visual experience in the urban context.
Entirely made of raw concrete, the project reflects our vision of a cold, minimalist and sober architecture.
